$5,000 Emergency Colic Surgery Endorsement

This form is a $5,000 Colic Surgery Endorsement that modifies the Equine Mortality – Broad Form policy by adding a separate, limited additional coverage for colic surgery expenses. It also states there is no additional premium for this coverage.

What’s Covered

  • Pays reasonable and customary veterinary fees for colic surgery performed by a qualified veterinarian.
  • Applies when surgery occurs during the policy period, or (if the policy period is 365 days or longer) up to 120 days after the policy period ends.
  • The colic incident must first occur while the endorsement is in effect and be reported during the coverage period.
  • Limit: Up to $5,000 per horse (aggregate). If the insured has partial ownership, payment is limited to the insured’s ownership percentage of the $5,000.
  • This coverage is primary over other collectible insurance.

What’s Not Covered

  • Any horse with a prior colic or gastrointestinal disorder history, unless fully disclosed and accepted before the endorsement effective date.
  • Colic surgery that:
    • Is for a condition other than colic;
    • Is performed by someone other than a qualified veterinarian;
    • Is related to malicious/intentional acts, poisoning, or gross negligence; or
    • Involves a horse under 30 days old or over 20 years old at the endorsement effective date.
  • Certain expenses, including necropsy, authorized humane destruction, disposal, vet call/travel charges, transport, and non-qualifying facility hospitalization/boarding.
  • Any fee to prepare required veterinary reports.
  • Does not apply to horses insured under an Equine Mortality – Specified Perils Form.

Important Requirements

  • Immediate notice by phone of any colic, including a description of the event and the treating veterinarian’s contact information.
  • Within 60 days of the surgery, submit:
    • A written veterinary report (note: the cost to prepare this report is the insured’s responsibility), and
    • Complete copies of all bills/invoices for the colic surgery.
  • The insured must cooperate with the insurer’s investigation (provide access to people, records, and documents as requested).
  • All other underlying policy terms still apply unless specifically changed by this endorsement.
